Why Is the Bible Important for a Successful Marriage?

Marriage is a blessing.  It is a good thing and a gift from God.  In fact, the first marriage (Adam and Eve) was set up by God in Genesis!  So, to have a blessed marriage, you must include God in it.  And one of the best ways to include God in your marriage is by reading the Bible on a regular basis.  Through normal Bible reading, you will know God’s words, and what He wants for your life.  You will also learn how to live harmoniously with and treat others.

This advice also goes along with marriage.  There are powerful verses in the Bible to help you with your day-to-day struggles. There are also Bible verses for marriage advice and blessings. Again, you must spend time in scripture learning what God’s saying, seeking His advice on marriage.

Why Do People Read Scripture at Weddings?

Reading scripture has become very popular at weddings.  Most wedding ceremonies include an inspirational verse on love.  They also might consist of a verse or two on marriage from the Bible.

You might ask why do people read scripture at weddings.  If the couple is Christian, they would naturally include their faith in the wedding ceremony.  Quoting Bible verses on marriage is one way to do this during the wedding.

Even couples who are not particularly faith-driven might still have scripture included in their wedding.  There might be a family tradition to read a particular scripture at every family wedding.  Sometimes the couple may like how a particular passage about love goes with their ceremony.  At other times, the minister may choose what is read for the service.

10 Bible Verses for Marriage Blessings

The Bible is important for every aspect of your daily life, which includes all relationships. Marriage is the most important relationship you’ll ever have this side of heaven, so the Bible is the best guide to help you navigate the ups and downs through it.  Scripture verses are also a beautiful addition to any wedding ceremony, no matter the faith background of the couple.

Bible Verses for Wedding Blessings

Most weddings, even weddings where the couple isn’t deeply religious, quote scripture during the ceremony.  Many of the Bible verses for marriage blessings used in weddings come from 1 Corinthians 13.  This chapter of the New Testament is known as the “love” chapter.  It reminds us that our motive should always be love.  It doesn’t matter if we give up our lives for someone else.  If we don’t do it for love, it’s all meaningless.

“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.” ‭‭
1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭4‬-‭5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Marriage is about the creation of a new family.  At the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom come together as husband and wife.  They’ve left their parents, and come together as a new family, becoming one flesh.

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

Marriage is meant to last a lifetime.  Nowadays, it seems that wedding vows are taken lightly.  If things aren’t going exactly perfectly in your marriage, divorce is an easy solution.  But the Bible reminds us that God set up marriage to last as long as we live.  We are meant to be faithful “‘till death do us part…”

“What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

In Christian wedding ceremonies, God is central to the ceremony.  He is also central to the continuing marriage.  The following verse is often read at weddings to remind couples that keeping God at the center of their marriage will ensure the strength of their relationship.

“A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”
‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Bible Verses for Married Couples

Even after the wedding, married couples still look to the Bible for advice.  Christian couples know that they need the Bible in their everyday lives.  The Bible reminds every couple that their marriage is a blessing.

Sometimes we need a reminder that our spouse is a gift from God.  Marriage wasn’t created to bring us down, it was made for our pleasure!  We should remember this, and spend more time celebrating it!

“The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the Lord.” ‭‭
Proverbs‬ ‭18‬:‭22‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Colossians 3 has excellent advice for the way wives and husbands should both treat each other in marriage.  This passage reminds both genders how they want to be treated, and what the other gender wants in return.  Wives are told to submit to their husbands.  A lot of people have a problem with this term.  But they don’t realize that the term submit refers to a willing submission in the original Greek.  The wife is willing to put herself in this position.

This passage also tells husbands to love their wives and treat them with kindness.  During the first century church, husbands weren’t used to being told to treat their wives nicely.  Scripture reminds both parties how they should handle their marriage vows.

“Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for those who belong to the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.”‭‭
Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭18‬-‭19‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Marriage should be a partnership.  Both husband and wife, even if they have different roles, should be equally valued in the relationship.  Neither one is more important than the other.  They should both be willing to give a little and learn to compromise with each other.

My husband and I both love winning an argument, and we are both very good at it.  This can make for many feisty nights in our household, lol!  But sometimes, we each need to take a step back and remember that winning the argument isn’t the most important thing.  Our relationship is.  Sometimes, we need to submit to each other, and let the other person come out on top.  God knows our personalities, and He knows how we both like winning.  Ephesians 5:21 is a great reminder for us to put each other and our relationship first.

When my husband and I got married, we agreed that divorce was never on the table.  It was never up for discussion, no matter how frustrated or angry we were with each other.  Love is a choice and a commitment we made when we said “I do” those many years ago.  It’s not just a feeling.  We choose to love each other each and every day.  Some days it’s easier than others.  But every day, it’s worth it.

“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” ‭‭
1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Perfect love always comes from Jesus.  He loved us so much that He was willing to die in order to save us from eternal death.  The love of a husband and wife should model the relationship Jesus has with the church.  When you’ve found the one you love, you have nothing to fear in that relationship.  It’s a mirror image of that perfect love.

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.”

Seeking God’s Blessings In Your Marriage

A thriving marriage takes work.  It takes time and commitment to grow and nurture it over your lifetimes.  But, if you promise to remain faithful, and to continue to love your spouse deeper over the years, oh what a blessing it is to both of you!   In the end the most important thing about us that will be remembered will be our love.  And what better way to be remembered than for the love we have for our spouse?  1 Corinthians 13:13 sums it up best in our list of Bible verses for marriage blessings.

“Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.” ‭‭
1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭13‬ ‭NLT‬‬
